What is a DVR?

DVR Player Picture

A DVR is a Digital Video Recorder. A DVR adds another enhanced layer of television viewing enjoyment. DVRs include all standard digital benefits like the Interactive Programming Guide, Parental Control, access to rental of pay-per-view movies and reception of digital channels. A DVR is a digital set-top console with an added computer hard drive and two TV channel tuners.

With the two tuners a DVR will enable you to watch one channel while "recording" another or to record two different programs at the same time on the internal hard drive. Because of the computer hard drive no VCR is required to record. Approximately 20-35 programs or movies can be recorded and "saved" on the hard drive. If the hard drive ever gets full, either delete some of your records to make room for new recordings, or another option allows you to move recordings you wish to keep to a standard VCR. Recording is a one-button process and does not require any "programming" or "presetting" the DVR as with a VCR. With two tuners any TV set will also be capable of true picture-in-picture

The feature that really makes the DVR "shine" is the ability to "pause" live TV. If you need to leave the program you are watching to answer the phone just "hit" the pause button. When you return later simply press "play" and you pick up your program where you left off. A DVR will also allow fast forward, rewind; still, pause and other VCR type features when you watch recordings.
