Municipal Code

The City of Tifton Environmental Management Department encompasses the Planning, Zoning, Code Enforcement and Building Inspections functions needed for our community. Listed below are descriptions of each area of service.

PLANNING

The City of Tifton Planning Division is responsible for guiding and regulating the City’s long and short term development.  This includes the comprehensive planning process which establishes recommendations to effectively guide residential and commercial development for the benefit of current and future residents.   Included within the Comprehensive Plan is the Short Term Work Program which identifies specific projects the City should undertake to effectively implement the comprehensive plan.  The Southern Georgia Regional Commission assists the City of Tifton with its planning needs.

ZONING     City of Tifton Zoning Map 2016

The Zoning Division for the City of Tifton works with commercial and residential development by implementing the City of Tifton’s Municipal Code and Comprehensive Plan.  Working closely with the development community, as well as the general public, the Zoning Division verifies the zoning of properties, building setbacks, parking, signage and landscaping.

Whether you are planning on buying or selling property, starting new construction or additions, or opening a business of your own, remember to check the zoning first.  The Zoning Division also assists the Historic Preservation Commission, Board of Appeals, Planning and Zoning Commission, Tree Board and Keep Tift Beautiful Board with their functions.

Code Enforcement

Tifton is a wonderful place to live because our residents take pride in their homes and neighborhoods.  To keep Tifton looking great, the City has adopted ordinances regulating property maintenance, business licenses and other code matters in both residential and commercial areas.  Code Enforcement responds to complaints regarding property maintenance and other issues and regularly patrols the City to identify violations. When violations are identified, enforcement action is taken.  This can include warnings and/or notices to appear in Municipal Court.

Buildings Inspections

The Building Division is responsible for the issuance of permits based on the current requirements of the building code as adopted by the City of Tifton.  We review all construction plans for compliance with the building codes and any City ordinance that may apply.  We at the Building Department have the duty and responsibility to the citizens of this City to make sure that any new construction, remodel, or addition done to property, is safe and completed in accordance with requirements of the codes.  We also make sure that all life, safety, & fire codes are adhered to.  The state also charges us with the responsibility to see that all rules associated with the Americans with Disabilities Acts are followed in order to afford all citizens with equal access to business and housing.  The Building Division strives to provide the proper information and efficient process to give the customer the service they deserve in a timely manner.
