| Tifton's
City Charter establishes the framework for a "Council-Manager" form
of local government. The legislative authority of the City
of Tifton shall be vested in the City Council composed of a
Mayor and four Councilmembers. City Council retains the skills
and knowledge of a professional City Manager to implement policy,
enforce laws, prepare and monitor a budget, manage the City
workforce and see to the operation of the City on a day to
day basis. Council also employs a City Attorney for legal advice
and opinions. The Legislative Authority of City Council includes
enacting laws, establishing policy, and approriating necessary
funds to operate the City. The Mayor and City Council shall
be elected in the manner provided by the Charter. A summary
of the Charter provisions pertaining to the Mayor and City
Council follows: |
- For the purposes of electing members of the City Council,
the City shall be divided into four Council districts.
Those districts shall be within the limits of the City
of Tifton.
- The City Council shall serve for terms of four years
and until their respective successors are elected and
qualified. No person shall be eligible to serve as Mayor
or Councilmember unless: (1) that person has attained
21 years of age, (2) that person has been a City resident
for 12 months immediately preceding the date of taking
office, and (3) that person is a resident of the City
and for Councilmembers, a resident of that particular
Council district, as of the date of qualifications for
election to the particular position.
