In 2017, the Tift Theatre for the Performing Arts was awarded a $77,027 historic preservation grant from the Fox Theatre Institute. The grant has been used for repairing and restoring the Tift Theatre seats.

Tift Theatre Manager, Kaylee Stokes, stated “The Theatre seats have been in desperate need of repair for years. It has been a project for almost every director and manager in recent history so it almost feels like a new beginning for the Tift Theatre.” The 30-40 year old seats have been completely reupholstered with brand new red fabric. These repairs will now allow the Theatre to seat its full capacity of 603 people, while also being ADA compliant.

Investing in the historic Theatre is something to celebrate. “I believe that having the Theatre seats repaired and reupholstered is just another sign that the Tift Theatre is loved and cherished by this city and by the community,” said Stokes.

The extensive project began in January of 2018, and will be completed for the celebration of the check presentation on May 31st. This event will be for the Fox Theatre Institute to officially present the grant check to the City. The Institute will also be able to see the impact it has made on the Tift Theatre. Mayor Julie Smith said, “We are very thankful to the Fox Theatre for awarding this grant to our own Tift Theatre for the Performing Arts. Having a beautiful performing arts venue in Downtown is a significant part of providing an exceptional experience in Tifton. There’s no question that the arts are a strong part of our economic development success, and this grant award will help us continue to build on that foundation.”

Additionally, City Manager Pete Pyrzenski, stated “It will be a great day for the Theatre and we want to thank the Fox Theatre Institute for the grant and their assistance in making this happen in Tifton. We are excited to unveil the future product and possible partnerships we could form for the Theatre and its operations.”

The Fox Theatre Institute will present the check for the historic preservation grant on May 31st at 3:00 p.m. at the Tift Theatre for the Performing Arts. There will be appetizers from 41 and Main, music, and guided tours. Anyone in the community is welcome to drop by and enjoy the check presentation.
