Chief Municipal Court Clerk, Gail Drayton, was sworn in as a board member of the Georgia Municipal Court Clerks Council on November 3, 2022 at the 2022 Municipal Court Clerks Recertification Training in Savannah, Georgia. The board appointment is a one-year term, and Drayton is one of the first board members to represent South Georgia.
The Georgia Municipal Court Clerks Council (GMCCC) is a non-profit association that promotes education and efforts to develop best practices in processes and procedures to maintain the records of the clerk. The GMCCC provides networking opportunities, scholarship funding for education and training, lunch and learn webinars, new member certification, mentoring programs and newsletters to keep municipal court clerks updated on current news and changes to procedures or rules.
The board of the GMCCC establishes policies and bylaws for the council and ensures proper communication of Georgia Municipal Court updates and changes. The board also creates the municipal court clerks’ manual and conducts roundtable discussions to discuss the needs of clerks, any current issues, bylaws and updates.
Drayton will also serve as a Municipal Clerk Mentor as part of the GMCCC District Mentorship Program that will connect her to a newly appointed court administrator or chief municipal court clerk to provide guidance, tools and support for the mentee to be successful in the role.
Gail Drayton has been committed to public service since her time as a P.O.S.T. certified police officer for the Ashburn Police Department. Drayton transitioned to Chief Clerk of Municipal Court of Ashburn prior to coming onboard with the City of Tifton. She started as a Deputy Court Clerk for the City of Tifton in July 2015 and was promoted to Chief Clerk in 2019. Drayton has been a member of the GMCCC throughout her career and is excited at the opportunity to serve as a board member. She also credits Chief Hyman for support in the advancement and continued education for his staff.
The City of Tifton Municipal Court Clerk’s office oversees the daily operations of the municipal court, including answering questions, managing finances, preparing and distributing court correspondences, attending court, recording decisions and maintaining court dockets, information and files. It is a great asset for the City of Tifton to have Drayton’s wealth of knowledge, experience and leadership, along with her access to valuable resources through her membership with the GMCCC to better serve the citizens of Tifton.
